The Golden Ram
Meet Dante, well know local artist from Tbilisi
As a theme for his section he chose The Golden Ram - the gold-haired magical, flying creature who saved Phrixus and Helle from sacrifice, carrying them to Colchis before sacrificed and immortalized as the constellation Aries. His golden skin was then hung in a sacred grove as the famed Golden Fleece, which later became the object of Jason’s legendary quest.

The story of the Golden Fleece begins with King Athamas of Boeotia, who turned away from his wife Nephele and married Ino, the daughter of Cadmus. Ino hated her stepchildren, Helle and Phrixus, because she wanted her own son to inherit the throne. Nephele, realizing her children were in danger, asked the gods for help.
Hermes sent a golden ram named Chrysomeles, which carried the children away on its back. The ram flew eastward across the sea separating Europe and Asia, but Helle fell into the water during the crossing, and the sea was named the Hellespont after her. The ram continued its journey and safely brought Phrixus to Colchis, where he was welcomed by King Aeëtes. In gratitude for his survival, Phrixus sacrificed the ram to Zeus. Aeëtes received its golden fleece, which he hung in a sacred grove dedicated to Ares, where it was guarded by a never-sleeping dragon.
The myth of the Golden Fleece has given rise to countless interpretations. A common element in all of them is the idea that it must have been associated with extraordinary wealth, whether material or spiritual. Among metaphysical approaches, the comparative studies of the Egyptologist Frank Teichmann are particularly notable. He points to striking parallels between key symbols such as the "ram," the "double bull," and the "dragon," and elements of ancient Egyptian solar cults (see Der Gral im Osten).
From this perspective, the Argonauts’ journey can be seen as a kind of occult initiation ritual, in which Jason, as a representative of Western culture, is initiated into the esoteric knowledge of the East. Against this background, the Golden Fleece symbolizes the purified soul through thought, and its theft represents a transfer of spiritual wisdom that is said to have significantly influenced Greek culture.
In contrast stands a more pragmatic interpretation, which points to the real gold resources of Georgia, particularly in Svaneti, where gold has been extracted from fast-flowing mountain rivers using dense sheep fleeces.
