The Color of Pomegranates
Tribute to Sergei Parajanov
Outstanding Georgian public figures and their creative work - when encountering this phrase, most people will probably first think of distinctly Georgian surnames and pseudonyms. During the process of selecting my work, however, I tried to move beyond this automatic mental association and instead thought of the film director Sergei Parajanov.
In line with the festival’s concept, I chose his 1968 film "The Color of Pomegranates" as a symbolic and personal way to interpret his artistic legacy. The film includes several scenes in which the character portrayed by Sofiko Chiaureli covers her face with fabrics of various shapes and textures. This visual motif became a key source of inspiration for the background of my mural, while in the foreground I used pomegranates, the film’s central symbol.

"Die Farbe des Granatapfels" (ursprünglich bekannt als Sayat-Nova) ist ein sowjetisch-armenischer Avantgarde Film von 1969, geschrieben und inszeniert von Sergei Parajanov. Der Film ist eine poetische Darstellung des Lebens des armenischen Dichters und Troubadours des 18. Jahrhunderts, Sayat-Nova. Er gilt als Meilenstein der Filmgeschichte und wurde von Kritikern und Filmemachern gleichermaßen hoch gelobt. Er gilt als einer der größten Filme aller Zeiten.

Sergei Parajanov war ein sowjetisch-armenischer Filmregisseur und Künstler, bekannt für seine avantgardistischen und poetischen Filme. Er kombinierte bildstarke Kompositionen, Folklore und kulturelle Symbolik, um das Leben und die Traditionen verschiedener Völker, insbesondere Armeniens und Georgiens, zu erzählen. Trotz politischer Repressionen gilt er als einer der einflussreichsten Filmemacher des 20. Jahrhunderts.
Geboren wurde er am 9. Januar 1924 in Tbilisi, Georgische SSR (damals Sowjetunion), in einem multikulturellen Umfeld, das von armenischen, georgischen und russischen Traditionen geprägt war. Georgische Folklore, Musik, Tänze und religiöse Rituale sind ein zentraler Bestandteil seiner Filme, selbst wenn diese kulturell Armenien thematisieren.
